Michael Lea
27 July 2016
Quite often there are perfect moments at which the Brain selects to award the Hat to a particularly awesome person. We had a particular moment in mind for Michael but got impatient and couldn’t wait any longer (seriously - we had been planning this for WEEKS), so decided to bust out the Hat at the next opportunity and award it to the man. The legend.
Michael is well and truly part of the awesome furniture, now - we cannot imagine Wednesdays without him. But what has really made our hearts sing “give him the Hat, give him the hat!” is how he has truly embraced everything we love about Project Awesome and is taking that with him every day, displaying it in all sorts of ways (slacklining in the back garden? Hella yes!) He has shown us real generosity of spirit, does a badass session departure on his scooter and sports some of the best, brightest shorts in London. He is also wonderfully supportive of other tribe members, which is the absolute best way to be. We love you, man. Keep on doing what you’re doing, it’s a beautiful thing.

29 June 2016
Whatta man, whatta man, whatta mighty good man…Look, we don’t mean to go overboard, but - seriously - is there anything this guy can’t do? A beautiful artist, natural musician, one of the strongest, fittest participants we’ve ever seen and, like, really nice too. WTAF? It’s all true. But that doesn’t win you the Hat alone. Tomos/Tom/Tom-o* has been supporting the hell out of all aspects of our little community and that is what really won us over. He’s been showing up at loads of sessions, helping out (which we LOVE) and has been an invaluable part of Unspoken Word since launch (not to mention his 6 minute life drawing - legendary). A fabulous performer in his own right, he has also accompanied and supported many others and that is a beautiful thing. We truly believe he is destined for great things and could go anywhere - we’re super excited to see where that is….

Ciara Beades
1 June 2016
By the time someone receives the Hat of Awesomeness, it’s pretty damn obvious that they should receive it. Everyone gets it. But with some people, you just know from the start that they are bound to receive it because they are peak awesome from day 1. That was the case with Ciara. She has been a bundle of smiles and friendly energy since she started. Ciara running hills on a Friday at Primrose Hill is one of our favourite things - even if you’re in a dark, dark place (it’s 6.30am, Friday morning, you’re running hills, you might vom…) this girl is going to get you smiling and cheering and high 5-ing all over the place. We cannot imagine our community without this one.
Klaus Thor Thorsen
11 May 2016
Klaus. Oh, Klaus. Where to begin. Klaus has been a superstar from the moment he joined us. He has been smashing out loads of sessions and gives them his all. He is also wonderfully supportive towards other tribe members on social media and it warms right to the edges and in all the little crevices of our hearts to see those interactions because that is one of our favourite things about Project Awesome. We are also loving his enduring dedication to the unicorn and witnessing his involvement in races and other events outside of Project Awesome. Tough Guy for you next year, buddy! And, of course, without Klaus, we would not have two of our favourite ever best-named tribe members: Wolf and Loki (*hearts forever*).
Hannah!!!
20 April 2016
It is a truth universally acknowledged that Hannah gives the best hugs in Project Awesome (and probably even the whole World). It’s a full on body contact hug that never fails to make you feel better, however you felt before, and she has a smile to go with it that could make anyone swoon. We could have awarded her the Hat of Awesomeness for this alone but she is also Awesome in numerous other ways. Hannah is one of the most welcoming of tribe members towards newbies, she is kind and loving and in no time at all has become truly embedded in the Project Awesome community both at our workouts and after-school activities. She is the first recipient of the Hat of Awesomeness from the Brain of Awesome but, really, her selection for it was a no-brainer.
George Restall and Adam Finch
23 February 2016
George Restall wins the (newly designed by Anne-Laure Carruth) Hat of Awesome. George was friends with Captain Danny in Australia in the year 2000. Half way round the world away. Then, Project Awesome brought them back together. For just that moment, Danny thanks this community. Running marathons, being a force of positive nature, supporting this tribe…George is everywhere now. He played a massive part in creating the Awesome Adam Finch run - for which Dave Finch takes home a mini new Hat of Awesome for his son who is undergoing a year of hospital treatment. The A on the Hat of Awesomeness was first created for Adam for showing Super Human strength over the last few months.
Emma Taylor
23 February 2016
Captain Danny convinced Emma to sing at the last Spoken Word event a few months back. It took some hard work and persuasion on Danny’s part, but eventually she agreed. “Close your eyes so I’m less nervous”, she said to the hundred strong crowd, and she shook with nerves. However, on this day, at the first ever Unspoken Word, she performed for a second time to a Project Awesome crowd and this nervous, quiet, previously hidden girl shined brighter than a diamond and was the absolute star of the show. She sang beautifully and topped it all off by ACTUALLY RAPPING in front of everyone. Oh! And, side note, she only bloomin’ organised the whole night, as well… She didn’t turn away from us this time, which was fortunate as every eye in the room was fix on her and our ears on her stunning voice. We are SO proud of you, Emma Taylor.
Helen Proudfoot
15 February 2016
Shows up in the best gold shorts ever. Exudes positivity into the group. Becomes hardcore. Plans workouts in February entitled #FreePlay in the playgrounds within our London playground. Wins the Hat of Awesomeness. That’s how it goes, folks.
Terri Witherden
20 January 2016
This girl has been the beating heart of Project Awesome social media, lately. All those posts that have made you smile or laugh? They’ve come from Terri. How does she know the vibe of Project Awesome so well? By showing the hell up and chatting the faces off people at post-PA coffee, that’s how. We are also inspired by her fervent desire to grow and take a chance on herself and others, which we think is a truly Awesome way to be.
Spike Reid
09 December 2015
Spike is a Project Awesome institution and we love him for it. He does epic adventures, sharing and guiding others around our beautiful planet, and when he’s not doing that round the other side of the world, he shows up to all the Project Awesome sessions. His roar during the Project Awesome Welcome Hakka is second to none. But, most importantly, he helps others every chance he can. He recently returned from helping Project Awesome alumnus Justine Gosling on her epic Iron Curtain Expedition, kickstarted Project Geography and has been co-ordinating Project Awesome team race entries. What a dude (with the most epic moustache in the Western World).
Lilly Hunt
04 November 2015
Lily (aka ABS) has Captained the London tribe. This girl recruits as effectively as an ocean trawler, works out with a smile on her face (and a tongue hanging loose) and her cheers create ripples as badass as her abs. This girl brings the brains AND the brawn and is not to underestimated. A true inspiration.
Laura Plant
23 September 2015
Laura is one of those people who brings her A Game to everything she does. She comes every week, whether she’s in Radhab or not (she just digs the Project Awesome vibe), bringing with her that fantastic smile book ended by two dimples you could lose a space shuttle in. She’s also a born Captain, with her crazy imagination and attitude.
Sarah Lipes
04 September 2015
Sarah shows up every week without fail, bringing a massive amount of joy and love to the London tribe. But she received the Hat of Awesomeness because of the many things she does for others. So may tribe members have benefitted from her business sense and knowledge (including Project Awesome, itself). If you are just starting out and need a gentle push in the right direction, you’ve got to talk to this girl. She will run the world, some day.
Donna Marsh
02 September 2015
Donna is the reason Project Awesome is still allowed to workout in the Scoop. She was the person who got off her arse and made magic happen - writing to the top bods to make sure they knew what wondrous stuff was happening in Project Awesome. She came for one session to test out Project Awesome and the next week took part in Annie’s Double Triple (6 sessions in a row). Since then she hasn’t looked back and continues to bring her awesomeness to every session come rain or shine. Donna is now such an integral member of the tribe that if she left us it might all fall to pieces
Chris Millar
21 August 2015
There is no one who matches Chris for his awareness and empathy for others. He cares for and every person in our community and makes them feel valued. He is also one of Project Awesome’s biggest recruiters to date, bringing his own sub-tribe down for a massive tribe mash-up. This guy is cool to the power of cool and has raised the bar in awesomeness in the relatively short time he has been coming to Project Awesome to date, and it’s an honour to have him in the gang.
Joon Wong
17 July 2015
At this point, Joon has been to every single session since February 2015. We are not kidding. Will this record ever be beaten? Time will tell. Will he ever miss a session? You would have to take him out of the country for that to happen. He also wins the most improved hug award…now come in here for a big, full body one, Joon!

Greg Drach
03 June 2015
Greg is one of those guys who you know is going to change the way you live your life. Forever. He is blessed with a creative, dynamic brain and is making waves for swizzle. Leading Project Awesome whenever he gets the chance, he is also smashing the running world to pieces with his very own project: Midnight Runners. He brings the big cheers and the tunes to Project Awesome and we cannot wait to see what he brings to us and the wider world in the future.
Lesley Sherman
29 April 2015
Lesley says Project Awesome has caused this girl to change in many ways (some would say corrupted) - she’d never been in trouble before, never had cause to speak to the police, never sworn, never got muddy - but it is truly Project Awesome that has changed with her presence (all for the good).
Anne-Laure Carruth
22 April 2015
Anne-Laure is a woman who makes you believe you can achieve anything and when she smiles it spreads warmth through you right down to your tippy toes. She’s not bold and brash but boy oh boy does she make things happen. She is a beautiful artist whom we are so proud to know and she recently hosted our first Spoken Word in a tent alongside her Land Rover, which she drove around North Africa and the Middle East, to bring back tales of positivity and beauty from the cultures embedded in those regions that she experienced along the way. She is braver than she knows and truly AWESOME for it.
Jason Schultz
13 April 2015
Jason is fast. Very fast. He carves up the Scoop each Wednesday and thrashes the hills to pieces. He is also one of the most lovely people you could ever chose to be in contact with. He has become a good friend of Captain Danny and has helped out enormously with Project Awesome.
Osama Elgohary
08 April 2015
Osama came to visit the UK for just a few weeks. He found out about Project Awesome and duly #justshowedup one morning. His childish giggle, his kind words and supportive attitude won him the Hat of Awesomeness in no time at all.
Esther Hartsilver
18 March 2015
Esther has not been coming to Project Awesome for very long but we all picked up on that huge smile and energy she brought to the team very quickly. When we heard that on her way to work, one day, she had seen someone having a medical emergency and spent her morning literally saving their life, there was no way she was not going to be wearing the Hat of Awesomeness STAT. (Postscript: we are incredibly saddened to tell you that Esther passed away in April 2015 in a road accident. Shortly afterwards, we celebrated her life as she would have wanted: by running her favourite running route in bright colours, being super loud and causing just a little bit of chaos. Her love lives on in every single person who wears the Hat of Awesomeness and every person that was lucky enough to have seen her smile.)
Charlie Watson
11 March 2015
Not only is this woman showing up every week and bringing her friends along for the Project Awesome ride, she is also one of the most popular sports bloggers in London Town and we are super proud and grateful that she likes to write about Project Awesome!
Adam Sultan
04 March 2015
Adam started coming to Project Awesome last year. A quiet boy then, he hid from the spotlight. Now, he’s decided to run 15 marathons in 2015 (towards his #LifeYears project) and also organises fun runs across London, all to raise money for the charity MacMillan which is very close to his heart. In doing so, the quiet boy has blossomed into one of our loudest, most energised tribe members. The Section 12 Cheer is all down to Adam and is a Project Awesome institution.
Abby Shulman
12 February 2015
Captain Danny was recently lucky enough to spend a weekend with Abby running across the Isle of Skye. Whilst doing so, he talked to Abby about the fact that if everyone in Project Awesome wrote down their five favourite Project Awesome people, she would be on every list. After a few tears, she reminded Danny of who she was before she started coming to Project Awesome. She was quiet, reserved, didn’t give hugs, wore black and didn’t particularly like herself, or others. What a transformation has occurred. We stand on the steps of the Scoop every week and watch this woman - now wearing bright lycra and a tardis on her head, hugging everyone she meets, shouting at the top of her voice and generally being a beacon of joy.
Sulafa Fahmy
21 January 2015
“This is the best workout ever!” Known for her enthusiastic screams of joy as she runs down Primrose Hill on Fridays, she has embraced this workout with all the positivity and energy she could muster, easily winning her the Hat of Awesomeness.
Dave Finch
14 January 2015
Finchy turns up to every session. He has become a badass and is getting badass-er every single week. His greatest asset is that he has no idea quite how wonderful he is and how much he is loved by his fellow Project Awesomers. Ignore the fact he is becoming one of our fastest runners - he is already the fastest person to step up and help a fellow tribe member. For that, he wins the Hat of Awesomeness.
Anna McNuff
02 January 2015
This woman lives, breaths and shit awesome. She arrived at Primrose Hill way back in the very start of our Awesome little community (before she disappeared to run the length of New Zealand - like you do…) and at first sight we KNEW she was one of the greatest human beings we would ever meet.
Laura Maisey
03 December 2014
Laura to decided to come once (and only once), in friendship and support for her pal Captain Danny. She hated hugs. Preferred wearing black. She most certainly did not like working out. In fact, she never worked out. But now? Now, she has turned into an almighty frigging badass MOFO who brings the humour, baked goods and an attitude we love to every session. We love the journey she has made an continues to take.
Caroline Joyce
26 November 2014
Caroline has a smile that lights up the dark. Literally, unicorns living in galaxies far away navigate but its glow in the night sky. She was one of the first members of Project Awesome and has been hardcore every since.
